Suzie and The Punk Knockers
Suzie and The Punk Knockers is a high-octane punk band from Auckland, New Zealand, spearheaded by the Tomilson twins, known onstage as “Suzie.” Though their real names remain a mystery, these fraternal twins have built a reputation for their fierce punk attitude and metal-infused sound, bringing unfiltered energy to every performance.
The Suzies first formed their band in high school under the cheeky name Susan's Pink Knickers, which quickly drew disapproving glances from their parents. Undeterred, they dabbled with Suzie’s Big Knickers before finally settling on Suzie and The Punk Knockers, a name that cemented their rebellious streak and punk aesthetic. Suzie-Wan took up bass and lead vocals, while Suzie-Two played drums, both embodying a bold, unapologetic style that’s become their trademark.
The band truly hit its stride after posting an ad at Auckland’s iconic Rock Shop, where they found guitarist Roxy and lead guitarist Taia, both drawn in by the band’s sole membership requirement: “must have ovaries.” Soon after, Jen joined as keyboardist and backing vocalist, adding an unexpected twist to their heavy sound. Together, Roxy, Taia, and Jen became vital members, pushing Suzie and The Punk Knockers’ sound to new, electrifying heights.
Growing up, the Suzies were captivated by their dad's heavy metal collection, from the haunting artwork of Iron Maiden albums to the gritty sounds of classic metal records. They would jam along, piecing together riffs and harmonies with raw enthusiasm. Their love of punk and metal solidified when they discovered Metallica, and their musical ambitions grew. Eventually, they learned that both parents had played in bands—a revelation that only deepened their connection to music. Their mom even made a guest appearance on a cover of Motörhead’s "Back on the Funny Farm," giving a nod to the family’s rock ‘n’ roll roots.
With dad teaching them the basics on Beatles and Sabbath riffs, the twins built a foundation in classic rock and forged their way to punk and metal. With Roxy, Taia, and Jen, they resisted the mainstream “girly-girl” pop scene, instead embracing their punk roots and carving their place in Auckland’s underground music circuit. By the time they were old enough to play clubs and venues, their craft was a finely honed blade, sharp, unapologetic, and unmistakably Suzie.
Today, Suzie and The Punk Knockers are notorious for their raucous live shows, snarling vocals, and raw punk energy. With flashes of humor and a fierce commitment to staying true to their roots, they remain proudly New Zealand, proudly punk, and a force to be reckoned with.
